Achieving your UNIQUE.

My name is Haley Adkins, and I am the owner of STAYU. In reality – owner, operator,
supervisor, head designer, photographer, editor, marketer, and custodian. I grew up in a tiny town in Wyoming, where I have always loved all kinds of art. I danced for 16 years before hanging up that creative hat to pick up another one. While I always wanted to be one of those girls who could sketch, draw, and keep aesthetic little journals, I simply wasn’t. I struggled with comparison for a long time; to other creative minds, artists, and people in general. I began to develop a concept that would support people by helping them be confident and achieve who they really are. I was trying to do this for myself and wanted others to strive to achieve their UNIQUE. I ran through a multitude of ideas before STAYU came to life, but first, let’s backtrack a little.

A story that I wanted to get out there.

When I was 15, like any teenager, I was trying to make some extra cash. I decided to sell
some of my old clothes on Instagram with no reason in mind other than to make a little spending money. Our generation has taken an interest in thrifting. I can’t put my finger on exactly what gave us the idea, but my older sister and I started to thrift clothing and resell it. Today, reselling vintage and thrifted clothing is extremely popular. I am not going to claim that we were a “first” in the resale business by any means… We actually had no idea if we were doing a decent job; we were just having fun. After a few months, we decided to take it a little more seriously. I had created a website for a history project and realized I could make one for our business and also get our name out there. While we were still just having fun, I was unknowingly developing entrepreneurial tactics and a love for it at a young age. After almost 2 years of resale in states from Washington to Florida, we outgrew it.

So remember when I was saying I was never able to be that girl who could draw and sketch and journal? Yeah…let’s go back to that. I couldn’t even sketch clothing on a paper, much less design or create my own clothing. I had big dreams, but I had no idea where to even begin to achieve them. However, once I finally started, I surprised myself with what I could do. STAYU’s first two collections were born as I put phrases and designs on clothing. The phrases meant something to me and had a story behind them – a story I wanted to get out there. Moving forward, I struggled with the consistency of the themes and ideas for STAYU. I soon realized that the collections meant something to me, and made my story unique. Not only that, but everyone has stories that mean something to them and make them unique. So while you may be able to find a graphic hoodie or tee from most clothing brands, all of STAYU’s individual collections represent someone’s story and something that aided them in achieving their UNIQUE.
